"Opportunities for Innovative Alkaline Chemistries in the U.S. Department of Energy’s H2@Scale Initiative” Eric Miller (A&EP, CS '83), Senior Advisor in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fuel Cell Technologies Office, returns to campus to present a seminar about alkaline fuel cells, and other hydrogen related technologies and systems. Abstract (edited for length) Today, technologies for generating efficient and sustainable energy are rapidly evolving, including hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, which offer unique versatility within a portfolio of domestic options. These hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are now a commercial reality, contributing to the nation’s energy security and resilience. DOE’s H2@Scale initiative is enabling innovations to generate cost-competitive hydrogen as an energy carrier, coupling renewables, as well as baseload power generation, enhancing resiliency and avoiding curtailment. The success of H2@Scale depends on continued R&D to improve performance and reduce cost in foundational technologies for hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization. Morefavorable attributes offered at high pH (alkaline) conditions have invigorated interestin alternatives based on alkaline chemistries. With the goal of facilitating the H2@Scale vision, next generation technologies, including alkaine, are being developed through ongoing component- and system-level research involving alkaline-based membranes, ionomers, and catalysts.
