The Bigger Picture

Advanced materials are a key enabler to improving the efficiency, sustainability and economy of our energy systems. Nearly every model of a 100% carbon-free energy system includes hydrogen in one form or other.  We believe hydrogen is a great way to transport and store electrons harvested from the sun and wind.  Fuel cells remain the most efficient means known of converting chemical fuels back to electricity. Alkaline fuel cells offer the promise of lower cost and higher efficiency. In each of these challenges, understanding atomic-scale properties of materials is a key enabler of progress.
